Vision
The Haifa Graduate School of Management aims to be
at the leading edge of teaching
and academic research that is relevant to a broad
range of Israeli industries and commercial sectors
in the global environment.
Basic Facts
The School of Management at the University of Haifa
was founded in 1996. The founding director of the
School was Prof. Eliezer Schleifer, followed by
Prof. Nahum Biger, and then Prof. Ilan Meshoulam.
The School is situated on the beautiful campus of
the University of Haifa, on Mount Carmel, just south
of the city of Haifa, nestling within the Carmel
Mountain National Park (http://gsb.haifa.ac.il
).
In 2007 the Graduate School of Business consolidated
its new identity as the School of Management by
offering seven differentiated MBA and MA programs.
The School takes pride in its high quality
educational programs and intensive academic research
activities, as well as its involvement in Israeli
society and the economy. We are presently developing
a post-graduate doctoral program, incorporating an
additional Department for Natural Resources
Management, strengthening relations with industry
and expanding our international contacts.
The School, now headed by Professor Sheizaf Rafaeli,
offers the following executive-level MBA programs.
♦
A
regular MBA, taught mostly in Hebrew for men and
women in mid-career
♦
An International MBA, taught entirely in English,
focusing on doing business in Asia
♦
An
MBA dedicated to developing managers of Non-Profit
Organizations
♦
An
MBA dedicated to developing managers of Schools and
other Educational Institutes
♦
An
MBA dedicated to developing managers of Real Estate
Businesses and Assessors.
We also have an MA program in the Management of
Natural Resources, and a budding program in the
Management of Energy Resources. Several additional
programs, including a program on Knowledge
Management, are in final stages of development and
approval.
All of our students are graduates or post graduates,
many of whom are senior executives, military
officers, physicians or high ranking government
officials. A large number already hold graduate
degrees in various fields, and for them the MBA will
be an additional graduate degree. More than half the
students are engineers and most of our students are
employed in managerial positions.
Courses are arranged to be offered and attended in
concentrated chunks of the workweek. All of our MBA
programs run for approximately 16 consecutive
months, counted as two academic years. As most are
mid-career executives, the average age of our
students is well over 30, reaching 38 in some
programs. Each program cohort consists of a class
of 30-45 students. A large part of the curriculum is
aimed at these tightly integrated cohorts,
emphasizing team work, group study and
peer-learning.
The MBA Programs are taught by the School's fulltime
(research) faculty members bolstered by dozens of
adjunct lecturers who are specialists in various
practical subjects, and are recruited per subject,
as visitors from abroad, from other institutions and
from industry.
The School also has 30 students at various levels of
study for a Doctoral degree and operates two centers
of research, focusing on specific issues:
- The Center for the Study of Organizations & Human
Resource Management (COHRM)
- The Center for the Study of the Information
Society (INFOSOC)
The School also has a "Games for Executives"
initiative (http://games.yeda.info).
Uniqueness
Our students are more senior and seasoned than the
average MBA student body.
At the same time, our academic vision is one of the
most innovative and forward looking in the country.
We were the first to offer dedicated programs
focused on Real Estate, on the management of third
sector (non-profit) organizations, and on the
management of educational institutions. We lead the
Schools of Business and Management in the country in
the development and implementation of online
simulations and executive games, as well as the
construction and use of other computerized learning
tools. Our international MBA program focuses on Asia
and is a pioneer in its field. We are unique in
Israel in our focus on general management (rather
than specializations in disciplinary areas). Our
programs have been ranked as very desirable, and on
some dimensions the best in the country by both
Israeli press surveys and international assessment
bodies.
The School has a proud and active alumni base,
perhaps the best alumni group in the country (over
1000 satisfied graduates).
Haifa's MBA programs put exceptional emphasis on
building bridges between academia and industry. The
regular program includes a special course where all
the students meet leading Israeli CEO's, to listen
and learn their best practices and how they cope in
a volatile business environment. In addition CEOs
and other leading industrialists give
guest lectures in special "Business Forums" and
within selected courses.
Haifa's International MBA Program focuses on doing
business in Asia and features a
Joint International Seminar in participation with
SIMBA (the Shanghai International MBA Program at the
University of TongJi). While other universities run
trips to China, the Haifa MBA program is the only
one that integrates multiple methods of learning and
includes mixed Israeli-Chinese student teams working
together on problem solving business projects for
Israeli companies in China. We are developing other
programs oriented internationally, including a focus
on India, and a focus on cooperation in the Middle
East.
