Responses to Frequntly Asked Questions
The Enrollment Phase
What are the criteria for acceptance into the
program?
Candidates are evaluated according to four main
criteria:
Grade average from the B. A.
GMAT score
Work experience
Personal interview
What is GMAT?
GMAT is a standardized test given worldwide for
acceptance into a business school program. It guarantees
minimum conditions and uniformity. It is designed to
help business schools assess the qualifications of
applicants for advanced study in business and
management, and is considered to be a prerequisite for
acceptance into all the major business schools in the
world.
What is the importance of the GMAT score and average
grades in the acceptance process?
As part of the acceptance criteria, a minimum level was
determined for these scores.
This is a necessary but not sufficient condition for
acceptance into the program. In general terms, you will
need at least a 500 on the GMAT and a grade average of
at least an 80 in your first degree in order to be
considered for acceptance. These standards allow the
University of Haifa to maintain a high standard of
admissions to the school.
What is the importance of work experience?
Very important. You will need at least three years of
work experience from when you finished your first
degree. This experience is a big help in facilitating
classroom discussions on different methods of applying
the various theories learned in the classroom into
practice. Some students have more than 20 years of
experience. Utilizing this experience improves the
learning experience of everybody.
What is the importance of the personal interview?
Very important. Two members of the business school
faculty will generally conduct each interview. At times
we also include a graduate of our business school in
order to assist us in the interview process. The
interview gives us the opportunity to check out the
prospective student and determine how they will fit into
our program. Some of the skills that we look for in the
interview include: ability to work in a team,
seriousness, lessons learned from experience, and the
degree of fit with our school. We place a premium on
quality students. Part of the interview is conducted in
English.
How is the Graduate Business School in the University
of Haifa different from other business schools?
There are several differences:
We were the first school in Israel to offer an executive
business program that provides for full time work
together with full time study, Thursday afternoon and
Friday, for the executive's convenience.
We offer a general M. B. A. that is suitable for
executives who need to get general knowledge and tools
in all aspects of management.
The course schedule is fixed in advance, and is the same
for all the students.
We offer a high level of assistance to the students from
the administrative staff as well as from the academic
staff. We are interested that you succeed in your
studies, and get an education as well as a diploma.
There is a high level of solidarity among the students.
Since there is no course selection (with minor
exceptions) and everybody studies all the courses at the
same time, there is the opportunity for students to
develop study groups. Working and studying in these
groups improves the level of learning. The process also
helps to develop groups with a social aspect as well.
We offer a special program of intensive study for a year
and a half until you acquire a diploma. The studies
start right after Passover and finish around Rosh
Hashana the following year. It is very important to note
that there are no vacations or breaks in the program,
except for short breaks for the holidays and Passover.
The curriculum is constantly being updated, and an
emphasis is placed on applying new technologies in all
aspects of the program.
There is an intimate feel to the studies. Everybody
knows everybody else (including administrative and
academic staff). This allows the formation of many new
friendships.
The Study Phase
What type of courses are offered?
There is a wide range of areas covered, including;
Information systems in business, E-commerce, Finance,
Marketing, Strategy, General management, Accounting,
Business law, Economics and Quantitative methods in
business. A copy of the exact program is found on our
website.
When are classes held?
Classes are generally held on Thursday afternoon between
14:00-21:00, and on Friday morning between 08:00-14:00.
Are there any exceptions to this schedule?
There is a workshop on "The Legal Environment In
Business" which lasts a few days and is generally held
in September between the holidays. It is usually held on
concentrated days from the morning to minimize the
interruption of the normal work schedule. There are also
a few other workshops by guest lecturers from abroad or
from Israel which are held on concentrated days from the
morning.
How can I get advance notice of these exceptions?
The class schedule is posted on the Internet in its
entirety, so there are very few surprises.
How do I get important messages?
Current announcements about the studies are posted on
the bulletin board at our website. Announcements are
also sent individually to each student by way of e-mail.
What are some of the other expenses involved in
studying in the program?
Some extra fees that are incurred are:
Parking
Class committee (Va'ad)
Books and other required learning material
What is the method of learning in the program?
The learning method varies between the courses. We try
to match the method of instruction to the material
taught. Lectures give an introduction the material and
give a basis for class discussion. Case analysis helps
provide a basic understanding of the theory. Group
projects encourage teamwork and the application of the
classroom material. Students are a big part of the
learning process, which is why we are very
discriminating in our selection and acceptance of
students into our program.
How difficult is the program?
The study program is very intense and very difficult for
a variety of reasons:
The workweek is condensed from five days to only four
and a half days.
To your regular schedule is now added an additional 12
hours a week in frontal instruction.
For every hour of frontal instruction, you must devote a
lot more study time at home to prepare assignments and
study. Count on at least another 15 hours of home study.
The group support that you get from your fellow students
is critical in reducing the pressure, and gives you the
feeling that you are not in this alone.
It should be pointed out that these are studies for a
master's degree!
How many students are there in each class?
In each year, there are two classes of 43 students in
each class.
What are the class characteristics as far as age, work
experience, gender, profession and residence?
These characteristics change from year to year. We try
and select as heterogeneous a group as possible in order
to facilitate the learning process.
The characteristics of this years class are as follows:
Age
